CR006: COMMUNAL
A multifaceted, internationally spanning project bringing together 10 of the worlds most exciting, independent record labels and DJs. Officially fusing a multitude of entities together on a single project to embrace and uplift each other in a world seemingly more fractured than ever.
Initially derived from the concept of ‘bootlegging’ the key focus of the project was to explore how different labels could co-exist and compliment one and other through visual identities and musical outputs. Bootleg culture allows for unexpected and exciting results to be birthed due to its subversive, illicit nature. Embodying this ethos with blessing from the contributing labels has allowed for a progressive crossroads of creativity to come to fruition, whilst financially supporting and platforming independent creators.
COMPILATION
Each of the labels involved offered a selection of artists and releases from their roster to work on the project. Tracks were pooled together from each label and selected by artists from other labels to be bootlegged using only the original track to work from. The practice of bootlegging music is age old within dance music, and this compilation sees artists from around the world dismantling and reconstructing partnering labels music in their own vernacular. The compilation spans 17 tracks and sees some of the global scene’s most interesting DJs venture into new musical territories working on a contrast of genres.
COLLECTION
With streaming and distribution methods taking huge royalty cuts of artist’s music, it’s no secret that the financial crux of independent labels and artists is merchandise. In order to reduce waste, reinvigorate clothing and financially support labels, we had each contributor donate unsold stock, for us to re-work into unique, experimental, and purposeful garments. Helmed by William Francis Green (Stone Island) & assisted by Linus Nicholson, all garments were dismantled and re-constructed into a fully formed, 100+ piece capsule collection spanning everything from bikinis to ponchos. The result is completely 0 waste in fabric, with every last scrap of fabric utilised in someway. The collection serves as a protest against the mass production and wasteful practices of the fashion industry and holistically bridges the gap between the fashion and music scenes.
LIVE
The launch event for the release takes place in London, birthplace of Circadian Rhythms, at their local venue of residency, Space 289, on the 18th November. The day long event allows for a showcase of both the musical and clothing aspects of the project.
