about
Faded Hearing is the latest output from London producer Blackwax - onehalf of NTS grime tastemakers Circadian Rhythms, and founder of the collective of the same name.
Written shortly after he developed severe tinnitus, the title alludes to the changes in his hearing, which has made producing a more difficult feat – however - Blackwax communicates this with a raw confidence and sensitivity to detail that permeates throughout.
The explosive track opens with a shattering gunshot and crunch, layered over a potent sino grime melody that gives rise to cascading breaks and a charged baseline. 'Faded Hearing’ is laced with serrated edges, air horns, pitched up yelps and anxious exhales of breath. The meticulous layering within the track spotlights his focus as a producer, and the overall energy is one of resilience. Blackwax re-assembles his musical influences with a sonic scope that is intrinsically linked to his diagnosis. The track resonates both on headphones and in the club and has already been spun by PAN DJs, J Cush and SilkRoad Assassins.
All the tracks are great but Stepper is the standout for me! pounding syncopated kicks, rolling handdrums and playful sample work, dancefloor destroyer. Jack G.
